The Greatest Invention of the XX century
By Elena Pak
While various debates about what can be called the greatest invention of the past 20th century are still going on, I believe that the ultimate answer cannot be found. The greatest invention is the one having the greatest potential to make human life better. It is not the thought of a creator that makes a thing great, but a thought of a user. We can rightfully call a toothbrush the greatest invention of all times, if there is a person who can change our habits, our environment and our view of the world using a toothbrush alone. Every thing ever invented by human mind can influence state of the world with the help of another human thought. But as we are yet unable to predict the future, there can be no obvious solution to this problem.
Therefore, we certainly cannot name the greatest invention today, but we can try to create one. And from this prospective internet seems to be the easiest answer. Internet is not only one of the fastest technologies in human history in terms of evolution, it also has a great potential of changing human life. Internet unites people, it makes all kinds of data transmissions faster, it gives access to information from all over the world and an incentive to combine and evaluate this information.
Of course, a huge part of the world’s population is unable to use internet as well as many other modern technologies. An astonishingly large part of humanity cannot even read properly. Literacy is a privilege that provides us an opportunity to use technologies like internet along with the responsibility to use them well. As of yet, most people use the net in search of entertainment rather than the news. They are not able to process all the information available. They cannot cope with all of the news simultaneously, so they tend to abstract the most impressive images or the most “interesting” pieces of information. They accept only those facts that are not too disturbing. They tend to be deaf to the misery of others when their own lives are stable. As long as flood, fire or famine is not in their backyard, it is someone else’s business. And this is the most dangerous type of attitude. We have to change it. We have to understand that every event happening on our planet affects us directly or indirectly. We have to become responsible for our own actions and those of previous generations. We have to find a way to reverse all the damage we have done to our environment. We have to improve the standard of living for all of the world’s population. We have to ensure survival of the humanity, which is threatened by our own activity. Humanity has to unite. Only together we can find a solution to the major problems.
And internet can help us find the way to achieve this. It brings people together, allowing the best minds of the world to think together and exchange ideas. It gives access to information and means of sorting and analysing the data electronically. It provides opportunities to implement ideas faster and more effectively.
We can make internet the greatest invention of the century if we let it change our attitudes towards the planet and humanity – let it help us help ourselves. To begin with, we can collect the relevant information and create reliable databases open to the public view and discussion. We can contact scientific institutions and use science as a main instrument in achieving the goal of improving human life.
The idea itself is not new, but internet can open new horizons and new possibilities in achieving it. To learn more about the apparatus and possible actions visit http://iHUB.org
